Current research

Damian G. Romero, Ph.D., FAHA, FAPS is a Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (Jackson, MS, USA). He received a Licentiate degree in Biological Sciences and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires, Argentina). After completing his postdoctoral training at the Department of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, he joined the faculty staff as an Instructor of Medicine. He was, later on, was promoted to his current rank of Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Dr. Romero’s research interests involve the elucidations of the molecular, cellular, and physiological mechanisms of target organ injury in Primary Aldosteronism and the cardiometabolic dysregulations in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. His current research focuses on the role of microRNAs in health and disease, with a particular emphasis on the endocrine, cardiovascular, hepatobiliary, and nervous systems.

Dr. Romero is a fellow of the American Heart Association and the American Physiological Society, and a member of the Endocrine Society and the above-mentioned scientific societies.  He is the past-Chair of the Endocrinology and Metabolism section of the American Physiological Society and has previously held multiple positions in that society.

He has received multiple awards from the American Physiological Society, the American Heart Association, and the Endocrine Society.

He is Associate Editor of Frontiers in Endocrinology (Cellular Endocrinology) and an Editorial Board member of Annals of Translational Medicine (Biochemical Science and Genomics).

He has published over 90 original manuscripts, reviews, editorials, and book chapters.

His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society.
